BP Endeavour

Working for BP the project called for Acergy to execute an 18” hot tap into the Forties field pipeline system to create an oil export route for the Buzzard field. Given the strategic importance of the field to BP, and to Britain as a whole, the task was a challenging one. With the hot tap to be installed at a depth of 90 metres its design had to be completely robust so as not to interfere with the pipeline’s task of transporting 600,000 barrels per day.

Following full-scale onshore trials we started offshore operations using our patent heat induction system to hyperbarically weld a branch nipple to the Forties pipeline, without affecting its operations in any way. A gate valve was then installed on top of the welded branch nipple, and the pipeline given added strength with a reinforcement shield. Finally we were ready to successfully cut into the Forties pipeline through the gate valve to establish the hot tap, again with no disruption to the operation of the pipeline. Thanks to careful planning, proprietary technology and all the hard work of our team the project was completed on time, on budget, and with an outstanding safety and environmental record, much to the satisfaction of our client.
